How to build a commercial content map from your product

Zaki Hasan

Keyword research can reveal demand and still produce a weak site. The durable source of commercial coverage is the set of decisions buyers must make to understand, trust, implement, and choose the product.

The decision this method improves

This method decides which commercial pages deserve separate URLs, which questions belong together, and where the site has a true information gap. It prevents a high page count from becoming a large collection of wording variants.

A working method

  1. Inventory shipped product capabilities from code, documentation, pricing, and connected destinations.
  2. List the buyer roles, company types, operating constraints, and desired outcomes that materially change the answer.
  3. Record alternatives buyers use today, including software, services, hiring, and manual processes.
  4. Map implementation, security, integration, pricing, proof, and limitation questions from sales and support.
  5. Group questions that lead to the same conclusion and separate those requiring different evidence or workflows.
  6. Assign each page one reader decision, direct answer, evidence plan, related pages, and next product action.

The evidence to keep

For every page, keep the product facts that support it, the buyer question, the current pages checked for overlap, and the reason another page cannot satisfy the intent. Search demand and competitor coverage can support prioritization, but they should not substitute for product truth.

The common failure mode

A common map starts with a keyword modifier grid: product for every industry, role, and city. Most cells produce the same answer. Publish the page only when workflow, constraints, terminology, evidence, or product fit changes enough to help that reader differently.

How to measure the result

Track distinct pages published, overlap found during review, qualified visits by decision type, progression through related pages, signup assists, and sales questions resolved. Merge pages that repeatedly attract the same reader and provide the same answer.

What to do next

Create seven columns: capability, buyer, situation, alternative, objection, proof, and implementation. Fill them from the actual product and customer record, then connect combinations only where the answer changes. Use content gap analysis to compare that map with the live site.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages belong in a commercial content map?
As many as the number of distinct buyer decisions the company can answer with useful evidence. There is no target count independent of product and market complexity.
Should every feature have its own page?
Only when the feature represents a buyer-recognized job or materially affects a decision. Small interface details usually belong on a broader workflow page.
How do I prevent keyword cannibalization?
Group queries by the answer and reader decision. If two pages would make the same argument with the same evidence, plan one stronger page.
